BROOKSHIRE, TEXAS — Oldcastle Infrastructure is reaffirming its commitment to safety and environmental stewardship after the team at the Brookshire, TX plant successfully and responsibly relocated a swarm of bees discovered beneath a dry cast mixer deck. 

When employees noticed the swarm, they acted quickly; but rather than defaulting to extermination, the team chose a path aligned with Oldcastle Infrastructure’s sustainability values. Plant Manager Heath Stuerke immediately contacted a trusted local expert: beekeeper and retired Oldcastle Infrastructure team member, Don Grote, to safely remove and relocate the colony. 

“Our only thought was protecting the bees and protecting our team,” said Stuerke. “We understand how important bees are to the environment, so preserving them was the right thing to do.” He encouraged nearby plant managers to reach out to Don for help should similar situations arise.

Bees play an essential role in healthy ecosystems and global food production. They are responsible for pollinating roughly 75% of the world’s food crops, supporting biodiversity, and helping maintain climate‑resilient habitats.
