• We will eventually become what we believe, so believe in yourself.”

How long have you worked for Oldcastle Infrastructure?

June 1st will be 1 year.

How long have you worked in your field?

I’ve been doing HR for Oldcastle since Feb 2022. I’ve been in the industry for a little over 7 years. I worked in Commercial Construction (Pro desk) as a Sales Specialist for Lowe’s Home Improvement.

What do you love most about your job?

I love helping people, I enjoy being challenged. I love being a part of the HR team, I learn something new every day.

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced as a woman in your field and how have you overcome it?

A big challenge that comes to mind would be while working for my previous employer, I was trying to assist a customer and they stopped me in my tracks and asked if a “man” could help them because a “female” wouldn’t know. I overcame it by being persistent and not letting anyone make me believe I’m not good enough or smart enough to do my job. I built many relationships with contractors over the years, most would come back just to work with me. We will eventually become what we believe, so believe in yourself.

What has been the proudest moment of your career?

I was a Top Sales Specialist, selling over 1.5 million dollars in one (1) year.

What advice do you have for other women entering the industry?

Stay focused, we are paving the way for all the future Women in Construction.

Why do you believe it is important for women to be part of what has historically been a male-dominated industry?

It allows women who have a passion for building, designing, and managing big Construction projects the feeling of Achievement. It will also help change the perception that “Construction should be limited to MEN”.

What impact do you believe women have made on the industry?

In the past women mainly held administrative support positions such as typing, filing, and answering phones. The idea that “construction is a man’s world” needs to change. Because more and more women have proven to be very successful in executive positions and in the field (boots on the ground), construction firms are more likely to hire women without any unconscious bias.

What can the industry do to influence more women to join?

Create more training programs that specifically meet women’s needs and have mentors available. Make sure that Men and Women are treated equally, including wages and Having the chance to apply for positions that usually only men could apply for.

What skills do you feel have helped you be successful in your role?

I have experienced prejudice against being a woman in construction. I’ve learned to never judge anyone or assume they can’t do something just because of their gender.

What is something unique about you?

I can fit in anywhere I go. I love to ride my Harley; it makes me feel empowered.

How do you hope to impact the industry?

I hope that I encourage women to step away from the stereotype created long ago, be different, be brave, and jump over the hurdles that get in the way. We have the power to make a difference.

Who or what inspires you?

My dad is an Electrician and owns his own business. I always heard growing up that a job site wasn’t meant for women. Man, was he wrong. He inspired me to prove that theory wrong. I learned to read plans, I’ve walked job sites to make a material list, and I learned how to install light switches and install plugs.
