• It’s important for women to be a part of this industry because having multiple perspectives is always a positive thing. Everyone’s brain works in different ways so the more variety the better.”

Suzanne Brasier

R&D Chemist/ Material Technician
Acworth

How long have you worked for Oldcastle Infrastructure?

6 months on March 7th.

How long have you worked in your field?

I was a Quality Control Technician at a specialty polymer company for 3 years and spent 6 months in Research and Development. 3.5 years total.

What do you love most about your job?

I love that I have the opportunity to learn more about thermoset processes and real-world applications.

What has been the biggest challenge you've faced as a woman in your field and how have you overcome it?

The most intimidating part of my new position was finding where I fit in within the production/warehouse culture at our plant. I was able to overcome this because my job requires me to spend a lot of time working directly with production operators and they I made it clear early on that they’re happy to have me in my role.

What has been the proudest moment of your career?

Getting hired at Oldcastle! I entered the industry at a QC level, and when I was ready to shift into R&D Oldcastle gave me that opportunity. I’m glad to learn the R&D ropes under a company that prioritizes efficiency and innovation.

What advice do you have for other women entering the industry?

Ask lots of questions! Everyone in our plant has been extremely helpful and made it clear they want me to succeed, I’m glad I have so many resources available to me while I am getting comfortable in my role.

Why do you believe it is important for women to be part of what has historically been a male-dominated industry?

Having multiple perspectives is always a positive thing, everyone’s brain works in different ways so the more variety the better.

What impact do you believe women have made on the industry?

The biggest impact of women on the industry must be the new perspectives, goals, and knowledge that women bring to the table.

What can the industry do to influence more women to join?

Advertise the diversity of roles within the industry. When someone hears about the “Construction industry”, they think physical construction of buildings, not necessarily all of the people it takes to coordinate the building effort, manufacture the materials, and run things from the business perspective.

What skills do you feel have helped you be successful in your role?

My email communication skills and positive attitude/social skills have been the most useful so far.

How do you hope to impact the industry?

My department has plans for long-term innovation that I am excited to be a part of.
