Decanter
Get effective and economical wastewater grit dewatering even at small treatment plants.
Overview
The Decanter dewatering bin is a non-mechanical dewatering system designed to retain fine grit with little water content, allowing for cost-effective disposal. Engineered by Hydro International, the Decanter is the ideal solution for plants with peak flows of up to 7 Mgal/d (27 MLD) for dewatering cleaned output from a TeaCup® or Grit King® separation system.
Applications
- Grit dewatering for municipal WWTPs
- Agricultural and industrial applications

Benefits
Increase your dewatering capacity
Heavy-duty casters make the Grit Decanter highly portable, meaning that multiple units may be easily used in conjunction. When one unit is filled, it can be moved aside to wait for the arrival of disposal trucks while a standby unit can be easily wheeled into place.
Configured to match your disposal trucks
To allow for easy disposal of dewatered solids, the Grit Decanter comes in three basic configurations to match local disposal trucks or equipment configurations:
- Front-loading
- Rear-loading
- Self-dumping
Non-mechanical design requires no energy or washwater
A grit system with Decanter grit dewatering will cut energy costs and reduce the expense of replacing moving parts that come into contact with abrasive grit. Additionally, durable construction ensures a long product life and reduces abrasive wear and fouling of solids handling equipment.
Economical, high performance wastewater grit dewatering even at small treatment plants

Rugged design, and flexible configurations
The Decanter is a durable and effective solution for grit dewatering without losing fine grit particles. The system is available in front-loading, rear-loading, and self-dumping configurations to fit your operating conditions. The standard material is durable hot-dipped galvanized steel, but the system can also be provided in 304 or 316 stainless steel.
No power requirements & minimal maintenance
Supplied with heavy-duty casters, the Decanter is easy to move. Without any power requirements or moving mechanical parts, the system requires very little maintenance.
Designed for fine grit capture
The Decanter is designed to retain fine grit. It uses non-turbulent dewatering, allowing it to retain grit particles 75 micron and larger.
How it Works
A grit slurry is introduced through the inlet openings which directs flow down and toward the center of the bin. Grit settles in the settling chamber and once full, the clarified, degritted water at the top overflows a weir and is directed to an effluent connection which can be directed back into the process flow.
Grit accumulates at the bottom of the unit burying the stainless steel wedgewire screen. Periodically, the drain valve is opened allowing the free water to drain through the wedgewire screen and the sand bed without releasing captured grit. The bin can then be dumped and a new batch started.
When a Decanter is used in conjunction with a TeaCup®, or Grit King® grit washing system, the grit underflow requires no further washing. Degritted overflow from the Decanter can be returned to the plant for further processing.
Performance
The Decanter retains 95% of all grit 75 micron and larger when used with an Oldcastle Infrastructure grit washing system.

FAQ
Q. What are the advantages of the Decanter dewatering system?
A. The Grit Decanter is an economical grit dewatering solution for small plants unwilling to sacrifice performance. The system outputs clean, dry grit with 60% total solids and less than 25% volatile solids in a non-mechanical system and, when used with a TeaCup® grit washing unit, retains grit particles 75 micron and larger.
Q. When would I select a Grit Snail, SpiraSnail Compact, or a Decanter grit dewatering system?
A. Selection depends on site-specific conditions and needs. In general, larger plants will typically require a Grit Snail® system, while in many smaller plants a Decanter system will provide the required dewatering performance and capacity more economically. The SpiraSnail® Compact fits between these flow ranges. Contact us and we can help determine which Oldcastle dewatering system is the optimal choice for your plant.
